But it's a deep economic management game. X3 is getting old, has a steep learning curve and its UI is clunky. There really isn't much in that department, tons of games offer trading but lack fleet management, or as tiny parts of 4X games with a much larger scope. Tried Endless sky because it was free, got hooked on space trucking. They make my second-favorite game of all time. Yes, you end up paying more, but at least the company can continue to make the game.) Yes, I am an EGOSOFT apologist. What they're really saying is that they would have preferred to wait until 2025 to get all of it, rather than get some of it now and the rest of it later. Some players critical of X4 complain that the absence of all of the original species is a deal-breaker.

(For context, the earlier series of X games had Argon, Paranid, Teladi, Split, Boron and eventually Terran. Split came with the first DLC, Terrans will come with the second. So they included three species (6 major factions) in the base game: Argon, Paranid, Teladi. They couldn't put all of the factions in the base game and still survive as a company, because they were running out of time and money. EGOSOFT is a small indie developer, and they are making an incredibly complex game. If you're ideologically opposed to DLC then my comment here isn't going to matter, but it is important to understand the context of these DLC. The first X4 DLC, Split Vendetta, adds the Split species and factions. (The third in the series, Nova, was available on Windows.

Escape Velocity from Ambrosia Software was a Mac-first game that essentially kick-started the genre back in 1996. It's the most complex and feature-rich of the 2-D EV-likes.
I personally feel that X4 is much better than X3, but I think the X-head community is evenly split on that opinion.īut if you're looking for any Escape Velocity-like game (i.e., similar to Endless Sky), including 2-D, you can't go wrong with Starsector. X3:Terran Conflict (maybe Albion Prelude if you care about having a stock market that breaks the game if you use it) or X4:Foundations (with or without DLC - the DLC only adds factions, no game mechanics) are the way to go.

X3 on the other hand has 3 games in that title, 2 of which seem connected: Terran Conflict and Albion Prelude. My first thought was to look at the X series, and uh it looks like X4 is a pre-planned DLC milking machine with one expansion already out, 4 total planned, with the amazing title "Expansion III" for the next one to be churned out so I think ideologically I wanna give that one a pass.

After being hooked on the free game Endless Sky for over a week now, I'm thinking about buying some game that'll capture the same general feel of combat, fleet management, and trading but in 3D and perhaps with some more complexity.
